Ghosts: Halloween Special Review

Spoiler-Free Thoughts

I really enjoyed this two-part Halloween special. It had pretty much everything I want from Ghosts: ridiculous situations, characters making questionable decisions, funny little interactions, and a few moments that were actually quite sweet. There were also some twists I wasn’t expecting, which is always a bonus.

Honestly, I don’t have much to complain about. I had fun watching it, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the season goes. Although I could do without the wait until next year. I know television schedules are a thing, but that doesn’t mean I have to like them.

Spoilers Ahead!

I think the Hetty and her sister storyline was my favorite part of the special. We got a little more of Hetty’s past, and, as it turns out, she wasn’t exactly the model sister. Which, honestly, shouldn’t be all that surprising.

Hetty spent so much time being distracted by her sister’s mustache that she barely listened to anything the poor woman was saying. And look, I’m not going to defend that mustache. It was a lot. But Hetty, I know the mustache was distracting, but perhaps listen to your sister for five seconds? Especially when she’s trying to explain that you stole the guy she had a crush on. That’s a pretty significant detail to leave out of your personal version of events.

What I really liked was where they ended up. Hetty being willing to stay in the mirror rather than let her sister take her place was probably my favorite Hetty moment. For all her attitude, she clearly did care about her sister, and I thought that moment showed it better than a big emotional speech would have. I also appreciated that they managed to work things out without dragging the disagreement on forever. It felt like a satisfying resolution rather than the writers just deciding everyone needed to hug it out.

Jay also deserves some credit for getting involved in all this. I genuinely enjoy watching him deal with ghost problems without Samantha. He can’t see what’s happening, has to rely on Kyle to explain things, and is basically trying to put together a puzzle with half the pieces missing. And somehow, he still ends up breaking another mirror. At this point, I think the ghosts should probably hide anything made of glass when Jay is around. I’d love to see more of him getting caught up in these situations.

And while we’re talking about funny moments, Thor and Flower playing Marco Polo was fantastic. Thor calls out “Marco!” and Flower pops up with “Polo!” I don’t know why that made me laugh so much, but it did. It’s one of those little moments that doesn’t need to be a big part of the story to be memorable. Those two have such a funny dynamic.

I’m also curious about Bela and Kyle. Their little moment at the end, after the guy Bela liked from the gym went after another girl, definitely caught my attention. They’re sitting together, smiling over a glass of wine, and then Thor says what everyone else is thinking. I mean, subtlety clearly wasn’t the goal there. I’m not complaining, though. I wouldn’t mind seeing the writers take this somewhere. I’m curious what Kyle and Bela would actually be like together, especially with Kyle being able to hear the ghosts. I can already imagine Thor having opinions about that.

But the biggest surprise was Pete.

I had wondered if he’d come back, but I’ll admit I was starting to lose hope. Even the other ghosts seemed to have accepted that he might not return. So when he finally showed up, I was genuinely surprised. After watching him slowly fade away in the car, I really wanted to know what was going to happen to him, and the way they brought him back was a great cliffhanger.

I also like that they didn’t try to wrap everything up in these episodes. Hetty and her sister got to work through their issues, but Pete’s situation is still up in the air. So now we’ve got a satisfying ending to one storyline and a pretty big question hanging over another. Which is great for the show and considerably less great for my patience.

Overall, I had a great time with this special. The Hetty storyline was genuinely sweet, Jay continues to be entertaining when he’s thrown into ghost-related chaos, Thor and Flower gave us one of my favorite moments, and Pete’s return was a surprise I wasn’t quite prepared for.

I don’t have any complaints about the episodes themselves. I just want to know what happens next, and apparently I’m going to have to wait until next year. Rude.

A Couple of Things You Definitely Don’t Need (But Might Want)

After all that mirror-related nonsense, you might be thinking, I should probably get a mirror. Which is a perfectly reasonable response. Probably.

If you’re going to have a haunted mirror in your house, you might as well make it a nice one. This vintage-style mirror amount of spooky elegance. Just don’t ask it any questions. We’ve already established that mirrors are trouble.

And because apparently watching ghosts get into supernatural arguments isn’t enough entertainment for one evening, you could always make yourself comfortable with ghost-themed blanket. Perfect for curling up, watching Ghosts, and pretending you wouldn’t immediately abandon everyone if a Victorian ghost appeared in your bathroom.

You’re welcome. I’m basically a public service.
